Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being worried about the detrimental effects that stress could be a cause of. Perry stated that she was too nervous to be an actor during high school, but started performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry began her career in New York after graduation, performing in minor roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as an actress in the theater. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a lead role in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry had a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. Also, she was cast on her role on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. She was cast in the role in spite of her strong family connection to the character.
