Lars Mikkelsen3-765x1024At 27 years old, he enrolled at National Theatre School of Denmark. He graduated in 1994. Alongside his part in the drama series released worldwide as The Killing, he subsequently appeared in two other internationally acclaimed Danish drama series, Those Who Kill and Borgen III. He also had a prominent role in the BBC drama Sherlock as a blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. In the American TV series House of Cards, he played the role of the president of Russia. He won an International Emmy Award in 2018 for his part in Danish television drama Herrens Veje, which was broadcast in the UK in 2019 as Ride on the Storm.In addition to his home country of Danish, Mikkelsen speaks fluent Swedish, German and English as well as mastering several accents. He has claimed that his brother and he first started learning English through listening to Monty Python records and learning the comedy sketches.
